Staying Current

In order to provide the highest quality services, it is vitally important to stay current on the latest research in early childhood education.  That means staying up-to-date with the latest thinking with early childhood colleagues and through books, articles and conferences.  At the annual National Association for the Education of Young Children Conference in Nashville, Tennessee in 2019, I participated in two mind-expanding presentations that provided additional material for my forthcoming book on spatial development, Exploring the 3D World.

Dr. Doug Clements presented “Children’s Mathematical Thinking, Birth to Third Grade: Using the Learning Trajectories tool to teach arithmetic!” and Dr. Kevser Koc and Dr. Yusuf Kevser presented “Building Developmentally Appropriate Learning Environments for Effective Spatial Thinking: Understanding Learning Trajectories for Maps and Coordinates.” Dr. Clements and his colleague Dr. Julie Sarama have made valuable contributions in early childhood math with their development of Learning Trajectories, which you can learn more about at  www.learningtrajectories.org.  Upon seeing the work that Dr. Yusuf Koc and his wife Dr. Kevser Koc were doing with young children in Istanbul, Turkey, I was delighted that they agreed to contribute to my new book.

Networking with colleagues and movers and shakers in the early childhood world keeps my juices flowing! I had the privilege of co-presenting  "The Overlooked STEAM Skill:  Creating optimal learning environments & experiences to develop important spatial skills" with former colleague Jessica Peters, currently Instructional Development Manager for Lakeshore, and Dr. Mary Jo Pollman, author of Blocks and Beyond: Strengthening Early Math and Science Skills through Spatial Learning.

Designing 3D Environments

3-32 T NC.jpg

Organizing 3D materials in art centers, makerspaces, math centers, science centers, outdoor learning centers and playscapes requires a fresh approach, new ideas and a great deal of time.  Let me help you transform your storage and classroom spaces to incorporate 3D natural, recycled and other materials you already have, and help you create a "wish list" for future purchases.

Why Create a Makerspace?

This video from Edutopia shows children deeply engaged in thinking and creative problem solving in a Makerspace.

When children have choices and the freedom to choose materials and topics to explore, they

develop many cognitive and social-emotional skills as they learn through practice and trial and error.

Facilitation of Professional Learning Communities

When teachers are introduced to new ideas or instructional strategies, it is important to have time to reflect  in a community of practitioners led by a knowledgeable facilitator during the implementation period.  I have adapted materials from The National School Reform Faculty for early childhood educators who are interested in focusing on specific topics and having authentic discussions about their teaching practices in a safe Professional Learning Community (PLC).

This collaborative work can take many shapes such as identifying a classroom challenge and working to address it or sharing documentation of children's work and experiences to launch new understandings and implications for next steps. The focus and direction of the work is driven by the group. Having an objective facilitator familiar with PLC protocols keeps the group on track.

Support through Professional Development

When teachers express a need for assistance in improving teaching practices identified through Professional Learning Communities, self-assessments, or annual reviews, specific support can be designed to address those areas needing improvement.
